After many years, now a disappointment

Well, after coming to Paradisus Playa del Carmen 6 or 7 times in the last 10 years this will unfortunately be our last visit. Every year we have come and gotten a swim up room with our two kids and my mother in law with the family concierge. A few things that have definitely changed for the worse- The pirate ship pool is one of the main attractions for young kids and really the center of the family side of the resort. My kids love it. We found out 2 days into our stay it would be closed for the next 2 weeks or so. I understand that things need to be closed for maintenance, but I think they should have communicated this to guests who had booked here during that time. We could have easily moved our dates but they didn’t bother to let anyone know. Not only that, they were doing a lot of grout work and sanding, plus painting, so we’ve been breathing that in all week. Not great. The family concierge used to be a great service that felt very personal and worth the extra money. We have not met our concierge in person once this entire week. The first day he eventually texted us on WhatsApp several hours after our arrival which was disappointing because it was too late to make dinner reservations for that night. We tried to make them up at the dinner reservation desk but they told us to contact our family concierge who was nowhere to be found. Basically all he’s done for us this week is book the rest of our dinner reservations and that’s it. Kind of a bummer. The beach is totally unusable. It’s sargassum season so I’d expect that but we came in January a few years ago and it was the same, so I guess you just can’t go to the beach here anymore. The activity crew and activities for kids seem kind of lame now. Last year they had mermaids swimming, a hamster ball for the pool, piñatas, tons of fun stuff. This year all they’ve done is lead some games out at the pool. Today they had a magic carpet thing that was cool but that’s about it. Pretty big bummer considering the pirate ship pool and beach are out of commission. Just so many upsells- trying to get you to buy coconuts, pictures, wine, alcohol. At night they have vendors set up in the halls who basically scam you. We’ve been here SO MANY times and they even made us pay extra to get the room we had originally requested and I’m pretty sure was the one we booked from the start (the name of the room on the reservation was vague so they could say it was either one). Positives: the staff are all excellent. All the servers, bartenders, cleaning staff, etc. are so lovely and helpful. The kids club is exceptional. The staff there remember my kids year after year and are so kind and my kids love going. The spa was wonderful.

    Alfonso and Darlene at Nube

Alfonso and Darlene at the Nube margarita bar are the best bartenders in the whole resort hands down without a doubt. The drinks they make are amazing and they are true masters of their craft. They are kind and super pleasant to be around. I hope you have the pleasure of experiencing the two of them.

    Great service and spectacular food!

We just returned from Paradisus La Perla after enjoying a great vacation. Let me say it first. We are Black Circle members. Because of this, we have extra perks during our stay. From our check-in to our departure, the staff at the hotel did their best to ensure we had a great time. In the room, we have several gifts of very nice quality. We stay at the Reserve area and spend most of the time in the Reserve swimming pool. The drink quality was exceptional. Luzmara, Alfredo, and Jairo served us. They ensured we used the top-shelf liquor reserved only for the Circle Members. They were always smiling and ready to serve us. We did almost all our breakfast and lunch at Sante. From the first day, Olga, the hostess, welcomed us with a great smile and accomodate all our needs. David, our server at Sante, was a rockstar. He made sure that we tasted the circle members' special meals. I have never had lobster for breakfast until last week. I was celebrating my birthday, and they went to the pull with a cake to sing me Happy Birthday. Those details are great. Mario, Sante's manager, also ensured that everything was perfect for all our meals at Sante. Mario, Olga, and David are a great team at Sante! They changed the name of some of the restaurants, but the food continues to be spectacular. The variety of restaurants and cuisines provide something great for everyone. We went to Lemon Fish twice. Yes, it is that good, and Angel and Gabriel took great care of us. The steakhouse Sal was spectacular, too. One more rockstar was Pablo Valencia, the sommelier. He organized a wine test for us based on our restaurant choices. I am a wine guy, but not the rest of my party. Pablo did a great job of getting my party excited about wine. Also, we did not have to order the wine when we arrived at the restaurant. He sends the bottles to our table. The only issue with our visit was the beach. The sargasso continues to be an issue. This is not the Hotel's fault. They are doing their best to remove it. However, it is impossible. I am looking forward to returning to La Perla soon!

    Overall was good vacation.

The best part of this hotel some of the service staff. At the main pool area they have nice people who do their job at the best!one of them is Cesar and I guarantee you if he attends you, the service is impeccable. Plus he speaks very good English. Overall the hotel has dropped on maintenance, the rooms are not the best anymore(we had one master bedroom suite) and the kids entertainment is something they should work on. Not to mention there’s no adult entertainment at all. This was our 5th time at this hotel and compared to other times we are a bit disappointed.
