Serious maintenance and housekeeping issues
To start with the positive, the idea behind the design and the construction of the hotel is beautiful. The little ideas with outdoor games, wine tastings in the afternoon and lavender bags are nice But this hotel has serious issues with communication, housekeeping and maintenance. Four emails to different recipients prior to arrival remained unanswered a phone call to reservations with a request for a certain room location was not granted due to missing communication within the hotel. The cottage itself was in a condition unacceptable for a hotel in the 600$ league. A closet door that did not close, filthy old carpet in bedroom, the fireplace glass so stained that we could feel the heat but barely see a flame and a bathroom so dirty that we asked to have additional thorough cleaning. After this additional cleaning the sticky light switch, the mirror and the floor were cleaned but limescale on shower door , brownish shower tub discoloration and toothpaste and/or soap stains on cabinets remained for three days. I had higher expectations in this hotel brand but have the feeling that quite a few of the Marriott chain properties are heading this way.

Nice Atmosphere, Wonderful Staff
We arrived here as a large group to attend a family wedding in a Winery nearby. Between the ten of us, we booked five rooms. Two couples got their room in the main building, the other two got theirs in the building across from the parking lot, and we had our larger cottage in the back part, behind the swimming pool. We did not see the other people’s rooms, but our room was fairly large with a King Bed, a cozy sitting area, a fireplace, a little open balcony outside and a huge spacious Bathroom that contained some really nice, spa-quality amenities, plus soft bath robes in the closet. We were on the second floor, and it was quiet and peaceful there. Our statuses gave us food credits at Benicia’s Kitchen for all the rooms, but given our busy schedule, we were only able to use those for Breakfast on the first morning. We left before they opened on the other days. We had dinner on our first night at Wit and Wisdom which was very nice. We received exemplary service from all the staff members. The Bellman was especially helpful to us holding the door open while we were lugging items for the wedding, brought us a cart as we were unloading, and greeted us pleasantly every time we crossed paths. The Vintage VW painted Van outside was lovely. The Grounds were immaculately maintained. Along the walking path, we saw roses and other flowers, pretty wisteria, berry bushes and tons of flowers outside. So pretty… We loved our three-day stay here, and will definitely return on our next visit to Sonoma.

Underwhelmed at this price point & a variety of service issues
Much of my response to this relates to expectations related to the description as a 'luxury' property and price point when we stayed of around $1,000 a night. The location is good - not in Sonoma square but a pleasant flat walk for active people and they provide a courtesy van shuttle service with a very friendly/helpful and easily identifiable driver. My room was clean and comfortable. - Most of the employees we interacted with were lackluster. Generally not enthusiastic nor interested nor friendly. They also wear regular street clothes rather than any sort of uniform so it can be difficult to figure out who works there vs guests. - None of our large group staying in multiple rooms in the main building received bathrobes. Those in cottages (in our case priced at less than some of the main building room reservations) did. So for $1000 a night at a 'luxury' resort I expect a bathrobe as advertised so that I can walk to the pool with a coverup. Absent one you need to parade through the lobby to the pool in a suit/bath towel or strip off exterior clothes in public at the pool and then make your way back in a wet suit accordingly. There is no dressing or changing room out by the pool. This is just laziness and cheapness and makes for an overall tacky lobby/pool environment. - There is one restaurant on the property adjacent to the lobby/pool - "Benicia's Kitchen.' It's too small for the number of guests - we experienced long waits for both tables and service. There's also a pretty but massive table which takes up a lot of space and is awkward for anyone but a large group. The worst part is that they close at 8pm. Are you kidding me?! We had a long travel day and drive - arriving at 7:30pm tired and looking forward to a meal and wine. We were told that we only had 30 minutes to do so by the front desk so literally went directly there with all our luggage before going to our rooms. The staff clearly was not pleased by a large group of late comers. At 8:01pm they began impatiently cleaning all around us and told us to take our wine and move it out to the lobby as they were closing. Wow. 8pm at a $1000 a night luxury property and they stop all food/drink service at 8pm? Upon complaining we were told that "Sonoma closes early." They suggested we go down to the square to find open bars/restaurants there. Well...an expensive luxury hotel IN Sonoma needs to provide services to guests on site later than 8pm. If you want to relax in the lobby and/or pool area after 8pm there is no food or drinks service available other than a vending machine. - To add insult to injury, they apparently DO find a way to supply drinks/staff after 8pm if you book a private party. On the second night of our stay there was a party going on in the pool area and spilling into the lobby. It was staffed by some sort of event employees who were selling drinks to party guests (some of whom were doing room charges). So regular $1000 a night guests like us could not access the pool area that evening (as we were not party guests) nor could we buy drinks - but these party guests could. - We noticed room service trays/bags left outside rooms for hours/overnight - it seemed no staff was doing regular sweeps to pick them up which was kind of gross over time and again, not what you would expect at this pricepoint. - My bill was and is wrong. My 2 night stay bill includes 4 occupancy taxes, 3 city taxes and 3 resort fees. Obviously all these numbers should be only 2 for a 2 night stay. I have called repeatedly , emailed Marriott and gotten nowhere other than a voicemail from someone unable to understand this issue and telling me to call her back on her cellphone - which goes straight to her private party voicemail. When I call the front desk to try to reach her it's apparent that she has no office there - very unprofessional and at this point I'll just be disputing it on my card. - I'm a Bonvoy Platinum member and noticed that the Expedia rate for some reason for one of my nights was far less than the Marriott Bonvoy member rate. I called the front desk and they told me that could not match it and had no explanation as to why they apparently were offering rates on Expedia less than what they were offering to their own members.

Great Getaway
This property is a perfect get away. I went with just my husband but there are plenty of families here enjoying the resort. Its peaceful. The property is well maintained and has everything from restaurants, Spa, Pool, daily happy hour, friendly staff. We are staying in the cottages which are very comfortable in size with a patio, fireplace & everything you might need for your stay. Benicia’s kitchen is open and has a decent menu with healthy options. It’s just a mile from the Square & a quick drive to wineries in Napa and Sonoma. The hotel has complimentary transit to and from the Square and bikes available to their guests. Its definitely walkable. If you are a fan of Marriott properties, I highly recommend. Note: only drawback is the Wit and Wisdom restaurant not open Monday-Wednesday. I’m not sure if that is the case year round.

First-class
Very lovely place, inside and outside. The cottage room was excellent, with a large walk-in shower and an outdoor sitting area. Plenty of self-parking. Enjoyable wine tasting in the afternoon, and we spent lots of time at the pool (it was in the 90s). Didn't leave the property for the 24-hour stay. Wit & Wisdom, on property, was excellent, and enjoyed the breakfast room as well.
