Beautiful beach, nice pools & food issues
I arrived at the Royalton Bavaro on December 12. Check-in was quick and friendly. The room was nice, but the bathroom and shower were dated. The beach and pools were terrific. There was no seaweed on the beach, and there were lots of waves. The pools were great, though the water was cooler than during my visit last year. The pool bar was friendly. A la carte restaurants were good, but you had to reserve a day in advance. The buffet restaurant was below average. During the trip, many Royalton guests got sick, including myself. After exchanging with people, we figured that it was most likely due to the paela served poolside one day. Nightime entertainment was OK. The staff were very nice, friendly, and helpful. I took many great pictures of the beautiful beach scenery. This would have been a perfect vacation had it not been for being sick after eating the paela. I would love to return for a third time, but I'm not sure I want to risk it. Again, the beach, pools, and resort grounds were very nice.

Great week at the Bavaro
Home now after a great week at the Royalton Bávaro Resort & Spa. For context we have travelled to Mexico, St Lucia, St Maarten, Turks and Caicos and previously to Puerto Plata DR. While there are a few cosmetic issues - rooms do get a lot of traffic and people don't treat them with the care they would their own home. The ceiling in the main lobby was leaking this morning as we waited for our ride to the airport, but there was a lot of heavy rain this week. Hopefully they fix it soon. We are a family of 4 - kids 13 & 10 and we had a diamond club swim out. We would definitely do diamond club again. We loved having a quieter breakfast option - never a wait at the egg station! The private pool and beach area was nice too - we never had an issue getting a Bali bed on the beach or chairs by the pool. Shame on those who reserve early and don't show up to use them until 2 or 3 in the afternoon. That's just plain greedy. The swimout was great for the kids. We took some dive sticks along for them to play with. Activities were great and always lots to do. We went to Royalton splash one day - we walked there. Glad we did as we only stayed an hour and then headed back. We were extra glad we chose the Bavaro after going to Splash Food: Breakfast - we always ate at Oceanside - it was good. Lots of options and service was quick. Lunch - Oceanside gets very busy so we only went twice. We ate at the snack bar by the lazy river and it was ok. Our go to was lunch at the diamond club pool bar. The mozzarella sticks and chicken wings were a hit and the burgers were always excellent. Dinner Buffet - only went once on our first night. It was good. Lots to choose. Long wait at the pasta station. Very busy. Zen Teppanyaki - by far the family fave. We went twice. First experience was better than the second but the food was still delicious and the entertainment value was great. Rio - not a hit. The chicken and beef was delicious but our overall experience wasn't great. We didn't have great service and we left before they came back with more meat. Oceanside - I was very nervous as I don't like seafood, but I had a chicken dish and it was delicious. My husband had the beef and loved it. This was a pleasant surprise for us and the service was great. Grazie - we enjoyed our meal but the service was slower than the others. The flavours were good and no complaints about the food at all. Hunters - absolutely delicious! We all had Caesar salads and the Hunter onion soup - so good! I ordered the flank steak which is not a cut I would normally get and it was fantastic- so tasty and tender! The kids had the brisket and they loved how it melted in their mouths. Resort drinks were good. Their house wines were fine. I've had much worse at all inclusives so this was a nice surprise. Beer at the pool bars was cold and tasty. Butler service is a bit out of our comfort zone but they were very helpful and unobtrusive. I saw one cockroach all week and it was in a garden area. I did meet one person who saw one in their room but that was not our experience. Everyone's experience varies, but overall ours was quite positive and we give it a 4.5/5 and would gladly go back.

Bar Service
The crew running the bar outside the Italian restaurant were incredibly friendly and personable, specifically Ruben, Ysael, Angel and Willy. Always loved stopping by to grab a quick drink from them during the day. Recommend asking for Mini Beers if you can.

Great staff
Diamond club - Cristian, Alexander, Carlos, Juan were amazing and very responsive. Our butler Fernando was great and tried to make everything as smooth as possible. Spa experience was great. The rooms need a little attention with respect to doors and fridge etc

More for families with young kids. An average place.
This was our 4th time in Punta Cana. We chose Royalton Bavaro because we had a great experience at Royalton in Mexico and thought we would get a similar experience here. Unfortunately this was not true. Most of the reviews are pretty accurate about this resort. It is dated. And does need an update. We felt it was closer to a 3.5 or a very generous 4 star experience than an actual 5 star hotel. Also this resort seems to be more for families with young kids rather than adults only or friend groups. Room: 7/10. We booked the diamond club swim out room. Stayed in 20101 with a beach view. But really it’s a pool view first then beach past the pool. The actual swim out pool is big. You could do laps in it. But the way the room is situated it never gets any direct sun at all so the water temperature is so cold! Being close to the beach was nice though. The rooms are dated. There were bugs squished on the walls and floors but never cleaned up. Fruitflies in the room the whole time. No blowdryer in the room. Cups missing. Just generally no attention to detail. One showerhead didn’t work and water pressure was almost non existent. But our butler did get it fixed in a few hours. The butler was good for just that. Fixing things that you need for your room. They don’t do much else. Dinners are booked through the app. Which you have to do yourself 3 days in advance. Which was a very different experience than we had in Mexico. But I still think diamond club is worth it because you get more food options. And with the food being hit or miss (see below) more options is good. Food: The food was average 5/10. Some good some not so good. The buffets were all pretty dry and overcooked. But the a la carte restaurants had some good things. Our faves were: Oceanside, Rio and Hunter. Zen teppenyaki was good. But the actual teppenyaki part was not very entertaining like it normally is at these resorts. The seafood and steak were the best to order. The chicken was always overcooked and dry. We also tried the upgraded romantic dinner on the beach package for my birthday. It was just ok. I also find it ridiculous that they make you pay more to order lobster at most a lacartes (USD 60!). Other resorts I’ve been to lobster is included. I would not recommend any upgraded dinners. The food tastes the same or not as good as the a la carte. Save your money for something else. Coffee was the biggest disappointment. They use machines to make the coffee and it all just tastes like sludge. They do give you nespresso pods in your room. But I find those too strong for my liking. So we basically gave up drinking coffee. The only good coffee was in the morning at Oceanside breakfast. Beaches: 10/10. Love the beaches in Punta Cana. The beach was sandy. Almost no seeweed when we were there. The waves were rough. Not for little kids. But lots of fun for body boarding and wave jumping. You can borrow a body board or kayak by just leaving a $20 bill with the rental place. Lots of shady spots on the beach and you could almost always find a spot. Get up at 7am if you want a good spot or a cabana on the beach. Give the towel guy a few bucks and they clean and set it up nicely for you with fresh towels. There are a lot of beach vendors. But just politely tell them no and they won’t bother you. Entertainment: 6/10. Along with the food, this was the biggest difference we found when compared to the Mexico Royalton. The vibe team basically just puts on music and dances to a few songs for you daily. That’s it. There’s no actual interaction or activities with guests. In Mexico someone from the vibe team would come talk to each guest at least twice a day. Here we spoke with them maybe two times the whole week we were there. And that was just when they wanted us to give them a good review. The evening shows were good. More activities focus on younger kids. Again very little interaction with the vibe team happened at all. The White Party was fun, lion king show and greatest showman show were good. Fitness facilities: 7/10. I loved the variety of classes offered at the Mexico Royalton. Again here the options were limited and one day they had a boot camp scheduled and the trainer never showed up. Nobody came to apologize or explain. The app is supposed to have all activities listed. But we found that they just switch things up and make up activities throughout the day. So not everything is on the app. The gym is fine though and has all the basics. Pools: The lazy river was our favourite. But bring your own pool float. If the resort is busy the resort floats are hard to come by. The pools were all fine. But got very cloudy by the end of the day. Most days the pool was a refreshing temperature in the heat. Most activities happen at the infinity pool. The water park was fun but small. The shuttle comes twice a day and leaves you there for 3 hours which is more than enough time. Overall: it was an average stay. And I would not go back because I have experienced better at other resorts. They need more focus on service and attention to detail to really get them to the 5 star they claim to be.
