Not a 4 star. Really disappointing.
We've stayed at RIU hotels before and they were really nice, so thought we'd give this one a try. What a mistake. This hotel is run down, dirty, kind of ugly, has poor service, rude entertainment staff and rowdy croud. It's a huge resort with 1300 rooms, so if you're in one of the back buildings, you're far from the beach. We tried to relax at the "quiet" pool, and the music was so loud it drove us away. The dj rudely dismissed me when I asked him to turn the music volume down just a little. I like to party, but this was just obnoxious. We couldn't find the activities they advertised, they didn't seem to follow any sort of a schedule. Normally I'd expect the staff to seek out participants, but they were no where to be found. Finding a clean table to eat at was always a chore. Absolutely no dress code - even at dinner, people came in the restaurants in their swimwear. And they were loud and rowdy! The service was slow and not very friendly. We had to practically be to get water or a soda, after being ignored I eventually served myself. The wine flowed freely. There were a couple times the service was a little bit better, but not enough to brag about. The buildings are ugly, painted all white, and dingy and worn out. Our hallway felt like an army barracks. There was old puke by the pool, garbage all around - by the pool, the Theatre and the beach area. The toilets by the pool and restaurant were disgusting, with worn out doors, tile and trash overflowing onto the floor. Very much of a crazy spring break vibe. The check in staff were nice. The beach is beautiful. Spend a little bit more and stay someplace nice.

Great food
The food was delicious and the people were very friendly. The only thing they need to improve is the cleaning those rooms are not clean at all.

Worst hotel I have ever stayed in.
This was the smelliest and dirtiest hotel I have encountered. On reaching our room, the smell of damp and must was awful. The bathroom, had not been cleaned, there was hair, in the sink, shower, and all over the bathroom floor. The toilet, would not flush, and the seat was hanging off. After complaining about the smell and the broken toilet, we asked for a room exchange. They refused. The toilet was eventually fixed, but broke again the day after. It was a daily problem, so my husband resorted to fixing it himself. We had to fight for towels , they were leaving us one hand towel between two, for washing and showering. This was virtually typical for the whole two weeks, either house keeping was unable or unwilling to give us a full compliment of towels, so we ended up getting fresh pool towels near the end of the day, as we were fed up phoning or going to reception to get them. The bedding and pillows stank, it turned out our pillows were full of damp spores( one also contained a blood stain) as well as full of marks ect. They exchanged the worst one, but apparently they had no others over the full two weeks to exchange the other one. What rubbish. The mattress stank was very damp, cold, and in the morning after we got out of the sheets, they were wet where our bodies had been lying, so I had to request fresh sheets on a daily basis. We were getting up with our hair and bodies smelling of damp. The runner on the bed ,matching cushions and curtains were all full of damp spores , as the patio chairs. Within a few days our clothes were also stinking of damp, ( the clothes rack was also broken, so quite often we were picking up our clothes from the wardrobe floor) the air vents in the doors, were full of dust cobwebs and dead flies, The shelf under the optics was full of marks, dead flies ect, and the ice cube tongues, ugghh, don’t know what was on them originally, but were now growing green fungus, as were my flight bag and handbag in the corner. Within just three days we were now NEVER feeling clean, as our own clean clothes were damp , smelled of damp, as we were now living smelling and sleeping in it all the time, it was a total nightmare. They still refused to exchange us to a fresh room. The rep did agree that maybe a room exchange was preferable, and that housekeeping was not up to scratch, he would try to rectify this. We waited, the only thing accomplished, was a clean optic shelf, and the washing of the ice bucket and tongues. If he was in agreement with us, why did he not ensure management or housekeeping did rectify our complaint then. The self service restaurants were unclean, and food was at best lukewarm warm and dry, and they also smelled very damp, especially the one near the beach. There was also a bad smell of drains, in certain areas of the complex, dreadful! I found the reception staff totally rude and indifferent to our problems, they showed no interest at all. However the other staff , bar, pool, garden, ect in all fairness were very pleasant and accommodating. The grounds, were quite well maintained, the pool areas, could have used a bit more attention, and the beach area was beautiful. There were many more problems , but hey I think I’ve said enough. We did get some compensation after taking photo evidence, but regardless, I would not recommend this hotel at all, it was a very disappointing holiday, that we all wanted to leave within a few days of arriving . Would I ever go back No…. RIU you need to do better, keeping us in a dirty room, is one thing, keeping us in a mould infested health hazard another!!!!!! You were our worst nightmare holiday ever.

Very disappointing vacation for the price
We just returned from our second vacation at Riu Republica. Our first was pre-covid and was wonderful. However, this time was completely different. We will not be back. The beach is amazing. But that is the only extremely positive thing we can say. The grounds were run down and extremely dirty in comparison to our previous visit. The pools were cloudy with garbage, used feminine products on the hallway floors, cracks in foundations and walkways everywhere you look. Room numbers were falling off, ice machines and elevators didn't work. Some areas seemed barely functioning. The whole resort smelled of raw sewage the entire week we were were there. Our room was a disaster. Our outlets were so worn out that no plugs would stay in to charge, our AC unit was leaking in the ceiling, causing soft drywall, constant water drainage on our floor and visible mold. Our shower always had about an inch of water in it as it clearly needed to be unclogged. All the fixtures were also rusty. The linens never looked clean or fresh. We tried calling reception 5 times upon arrival but they never answered. We eventually went down to speak with someone about maintenance or switching rooms. We were told someone would come by. We waited in our room for 2 hours before we gave up and realized no one was coming. Very few of the staff were friendly. Our previous visit was full of very friendly staff and amazing service. But we met only a handful of helpful and positive employees on our second trip. They all acted as though guests were a burden to them. Very unfortunate as we loved this resort in the past.
