Great value, excellent service, spotless, and well taken care of
My wife and I had a wonderful time here last week. For the past several years we preferred adults-only resorts. We were educators, and while we love teaching children, we didn't want to vacation with them. Vacation allowed us to get away, just like it is for anyone with a job. We recently retired and didn't need to run away from children this time, so we chose the Riu Palace, a family resort, and it was a good decision. Perhaps being the middle of November kept the "kid count" down, but the children there were well-behaved, respectful, and appropriately supervised. At times there seemed to be a continuous chorus of babies crying - especially at dinner, but the acoustics in the public areas like dining (and no screamers) dampened the trill. We have been to comparable all-inclusives including Secrets and Couples. Secrets had a wider selection of food and is a bit more posh, but the additional cost does't justify the difference. Riu is a better value. And unlike Secrets, there's no high-pressure timeshare sales pitch. The issues us had with Riu Palace were minor, and would not keep us from returning - getting the right linens, having to turn in a card to check out a towel, room door needed a shoulder to open - that I have to mention such minor things tells you something? The staff throughout the resort were exceptional - polite, answered questions, respected guests' privacy while still being attentive. I'm not sure what the occupancy was, but we never were unable to find two chairs together at the pool or beach, which is important to us! Both the pool and beach areas were well-tended by staff bringing drinks to guests, and they were helpful to people like me who don't drink many cocktails and don't know what to order beyond a margarita and pina colada. The property itself is magnificent. I can't remember being at a resort that had nicer landscaping. The lawn, trees, shrubs, and flowers are extremely well cared for, as are the many pools, both for swimming and decorative. The entire place is spotless - even heavier traffic areas. There were a couple of times when the cleaning solution they used was overpowering, like in the large bar and some hallways, but can I really complain about that? We did not go to the sister resort next door - for no other reason than we never made it to the water slides and the disco, and the restaurant descriptions were similar enough that it wasn't necessary. Visually, that resort appeared to be much like the Palace, and the beachfront chairs and layout were effectively just one connected strip. If you want to take an excursion, I recommend Amstar. We have used that in several places in Mexico, the Caribbean, and Europe. No pressure, excellent drivers and guides, up front about everything, and Hektor will take care of you at the Riu Palace. Just show up on time to your departure in the front lobby, and everything else will be taken care of for you!

Great Vacation
We had a great time staying at RIU. Service was awesome (especially Arnold at the breakfast buffet). Food was good at the buffet for breakfast and lunch (did not go for dinner). Our favorite restaurants were Roma Italian and Zarape Mexican. Steak house was a complete disappointment; they forgot to buzz us when our table was ready, service was subpar, and steaks appeared boiled not grilled. We got better steaks at Zarape and Roma. Room was clean, open, and comfortable. Get the RIU app as it has all the information you need about restaurants, activities, and requests. We requested extra water and for our pool to be cleaned. Both requests were quickly addressed. Be careful as the floors throughout the hotel were slippery, especially when it rains. The staff does try their best to sweep the water off. Over all, great stay and recommend for a family friendly vacation.
