    holiday of dreams

well where do I start, this hotel and the staff are amazing, the room was clean and comfortable, the mini bar and optics were a fabulous touch, the restaurants were all spot on, the food was well cooked and lots of choice, the swimming pools were never too busy and there was plenty of room on the beach too. The entertainment crew were incredible, they worked so hard and the Riu parties were unforgettable, we had the best time and can't wait to come back next year

    RIU Negril vs Ocho RIos

Overall we had a lovely stay at the hotel. The rooms were newly refurbished, clean and beds were very comfortable. The room bar was restocked most days and there was also a coffee machine that you can also use to make tea! The food and drinks/cocktails were really nice and the staff were friendly. The pools and loungers were mostly clean, the beach was absolutely amazing and there were points in the day where you could find a nice quiet spot which we liked. The entertainment was varied and quite enjoyable. We loved the Sunday night Jamaican themed beach party! The entertainment staff are very talented and we enjoyed their performances throughout the week. One thing I didn’t love was they never spoke with their authentic Jamaican accents. It seemed they all had to put on a fake American accent, which was a shame as I love patois! In terms of improvements for the hotel, it could do with having an ATM. There nearest ATM was about a 10mins drive away (or over 1 hour walk according to google maps), however if you don’t have transport you have to pay for a very expensive taxi to get there! We were charged $200 USD for a return trip! Just be prepared for those taxi costs. The other thing to note is there are no lifts in the hotel. If you have mobility issues be sure to get a room on the ground floor. Some in our group struggled to walk and we asked to borrow the wheelchair. We were told they have 1 wheelchair for the entire hotel and it is for emergency use only. A few days later the same wheelchair was still parked in the same place we left it in our building and we eventually saw other wheelchairs around the hotel. I’m not sure why we were lied to… The were also power cuts at least 3 times in our first week at the hotel. The was quite disruptive to our stay but we did receive compensation from our holiday provider because of this. Having done both RIU Ocho Rios and Negril, they are both amazing but offer slightly different experiences. If you are looking for a more calm and quiet stay, Negril is perfect. The clientele in Ocho Rios are slightly younger, so there is a bit more hustle and bustle. In Ocho Rios there are more things to do in the locality and I would say the food was comparable for both, though since the refurbishment there is more variety at the Negril location. Overall I would stay at both again in a heartbeat! Just bring a lot of money for those taxi costs if you want to go out of the hotel at all.
