Had a great time!
The hotel met most of our expectations. Just note, the hotel doesn't have huts on the beach if you're looking for shade, but you can buy an umbrella from the vendors. The water isn't turquoise blue but it's a beach nonetheless. The hotel needs a renovation, which I understand they're going to be doing later this year so glad to hear about that. The beach has your typical water sport options and also horses if you want to go horseback riding. The vendors on the beach are respectful and aren't pushy. Make sure you go next door to the sister RIU hotel for lunch. Esthetically, it's way more modern looking and seem to have nicer perks. There's always a theme night or activity going on at the hotel. RIU Jalisco hosted a beautiful white party where RIU Vallarta and RIU Palace guests were also invited to attend. The vibe was really nice, it was like a rave/party with beautiful white balloons, drummers and people on stilts. Make sure you bring something white to wear. The rooms are a little outdated and did feel a bit too cold and damp some nights. We had to take the AC off at nights and I always slept with a blanket so make sure if you're going in the winter months to bring long PJs if you easily get cold and a sweater for the night. The water got just warm enough under hot so trying to take a hot shower to warm up wasn't an option. The hotel did respond to some issues we had like our outside light not being lit, the mechanic came the next day and fixed that. We were at the end of the hall so for safety reasons we preferred to have the light fixed. The workers were always cleaning, sweeping and ensuring the hotel was kept clean. I like that for lunch you can dine at the hall near the beach as the breeze and the views are breathtaking. Some food options weren't preferential, but you could find something to eat or check out the burger bar outside of the hall if you wanted nachos, burgers, fries, etc. You will share the lunch hall with a group of crows, who seem to respect boundaries, but god forbid you leave your plate and walk away they'll swoop in. I found the area to be very safe if you wanted to venture out of the hotel to take a morning stroll or venture to the town half hour away in Malecon or Buserias 10 minutes away, it's all very safe. There's no shortage of places to go for dinner. PV has snowbirds everywhere this time of year. If there's two tours you must do it's whale watching and the Rhythm of the Nights dinner show. It's unlike anything you've ever experienced and I was pleasantly blown away by the entire experience to the boat ride there and back. Great hotel, I wasn't overly wowed, but I wasn't disappointed either but would probably venture to the RIU Vallarta next time or try another hotel. I'm looking forward to seeing the renovations in the latter part of the year.

Great Place
I was a little concerned about going to this hotel as some of the reviews were not the best and it was a spur of the moment trip so I didn't have much time to research hotels. I was pleasantly surprised. We loved it. It was clean, the food was good and the bed/pillows were comfortable. They met our room requests and we had no issues. We loved the fact that we could just go to the a la carte restaurants without having to make a reservation (more hotels should adopt this practice). I was a bit disappointed in the Asian restaurant as it is just a buffet, not really an a la carte. But the food was tasty in each of the restaurants. We were disappointed that they would not allow us to have our floaties in the pool (never had that happen before). The one recommendation I would make is to have a LARGE board/screen by the theatre that shows the daily entertainment and night shows, yes there were lists but nothing that you could see while just walking past. I would highly recommend this hotel.

Service
The service in the breakfast buffet main was minimal at best The wife and myself sat at a table waiting for some coffee and tea and cleaning off the table Was like we were invisible

Major ups and downs
Entertainmant staff = amazing. Aranza, Francisco, Dino, Karen, and the rest were all awesome. Food = good Concierge = terrible. Locked us out of our room with zero warning because Sunwing cancelled our stay two days early. Forced us to sit and wait in the lobby for several hours in cold, wet, bathing suits with no access to our valuables/documents/medications. Made us pay a significantly higher price than what we initially paid for our whole stay so we could get into our room. Refused to offer any refund or compensation. Ruined the last few days of an already tainted visit. Treated us like thieves for a situation caused by Sunwing's error. Seemed liked they only cared about money, not their guests.

RIU Jalisco
We enjoyed our stay. The staff were very friendly and helpful. There was an assortment of restaurants to choose from, so easy to satisfy any particular cravings.
