Honest review two days after returning from OMR. Decent resort for the money but we had a very unfortunate room issue

I booked a six night stay as a New Years getaway for my girlfriend and me. Let me break down the good and the bad. The good: we had an AMAZING meal at the Japanese tempanyake (hibachi) restaurant. So delicious! Probably the best meal I’ve ever had at an all inclusive ever. Also, the fish tacos at the Mexican restaurant next to the pool were insanely good…maybe the best I’ve ever had. The resort is clean and well laid out. The staff is very helpful and pleasant overall. The entertainment at night was also decent. One night, a guy played acoustic guitar but he made all of his own beats/back tracks with a looping machine. It was very impressive. And the New Years Eve show was very fun - a stage set up on the beach with live entertainment and then a DJ and a dance floor. Fireworks show at midnight. Well done. The bad, or not ideal, in no particular order: most of the other food was just okay and sometimes, meh. The buffet is an average buffet… nothing terrible but nothing great. I had high expectations for the French restaurant but my sea bass was bland and my girlfriend’s filet was way overcooked. Cheap liquor unless you upgrade to “privilege”, which I will explain in a minute. Only two pools - one party pool with a swim up bar and one quiet pool. Chairs were hard to come by at both. The only food option at the pool was the Mexican restaurant. They definitely need more food options by the pool. Otherwise, you have to walk across the resort to the buffet. Lastly, we noticed a water leak coming from the light above one of the bathroom sinks. We reported it to the front desk and later that day, maintenance came and tinkered with it and told us that it was fixed. The next day, we planned on playing some tennis in the morning and then shower to head to downtown Playa Del Carmen for an afternoon of shopping. Just as we got back to our room, we got a knock on the door from more maintenance men. We opened the door and they came right in and began cutting half of our bathroom ceiling open. We had no warning. Long story short, we could not use our room for almost 4 hours. It was a disaster and a complete construction zone. We went to the front desk to voice our displeasure and discuss how they were going to make things right. We suggested that they provide a spa or gift shop credit and upgrade us to “Privilege”. They could not do the credits because those entities were separate from the resort. So we ended up with Privilege. Far from ideal, but better than nothing. Now onto Privilege… they told us that this was a $70 usd/person/day comp. What you get for privilege is the following: - separate seating on the beach and pool deck. This comes in handy since the regular seating gets taken quickly. - Food and drink service at your pool/beach chair. The rest do not get this. - A private Privilege lounge that serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner. This can be a nice option over the buffet. It has a beautiful view overlooking the ocean and it’s never crowded. Food is only marginally better though. - Upgraded liquor options. Grey Goose vodka versus SKKY, for example. - A private concierge that you have at your disposal for dinner reservations, excursion questions, help with bags at checkout, etc. They communicate through WhatsApp but if you text them any need, they are very attentive. - Had we booked privilege at the onset, we would have had an upgraded room. Many have a private hot tub. All in all, it was a good resort for the money. But there are so many options in that area, I will probably stay elsewhere next trip. I also would have given this 4-5 stars if it wasn’t for the way that our room issue was handled.

    We Will Be Back!!

Well what can I say about this place: We booked 2 weeks in Privilege from 5th December and our holiday was amazing from start to finish. Upon arrival (we booked a private transfer rather than use the TUI one) we were taken to a lovely air conditioned room for check in where we were welcomed as "family" and introduced to Juan who would be our butler for the 2 weeks and would book all our restaurant reservations and send us the daily activity programme. The good thing about this hotel is your room key is in your all inclusive bracelet which makes life so much easier, all hotels should do this!!! Our luggage was taken to our room and because it was quite late my partner and myself decided to order room service which was a pretty good burger & chips, we didn't need to order drinks as our fridge was full and this was replenished on a daily basis. Our room was a really good size with a lovely comfortable bed and was cleaned on a daily basis with the towels sometimes being changed twice per day and chocolates left on our pillows when the bed was turned down in the evening. We loved the food here as there is so much to choose from although we did prefer the restaurants which can be booked as many times as you wish during your stay. The buffet restaurant was great for breakfast but we found it a bit hit and miss for evening food. Privilege restaurant was lovely as well as you could eat outside if you wish, however although the service here is really good it can also be a bit slow. This must be an amazing hotel as most of the guests we spoke to had been there several times before and come back year after year and we will definitely be coming back!!! The staff in this hotel are amazing with a massive shout out to Manuel from the Sports Bar and Jorge, Tiger and Octavia and the 2 lovely ladies, think one was called JoJo (always smiling) from the Lobby Bar, tip them well and you will never have to ask for a drink!!! We also found all other staff to be very polite and friendly. It is very difficult to get a sunbed round the activity pool unless you are up and down there by about 6am which I am not prepared to do when on holiday but don't worry there's always beds round the quiet pool and on the beach so you can walk to the pool for activities then go back to the quiet when it's all over. The foam party was a must to attend. Waiters round the pool and Privilege beach area take your drink orders and bring them to you although I will say that sometimes it's quicker to get up and go and get them yourselves as they are not very quick and sometimes by the time they got back the drink was a bit warm, also take an insulated cup as these keep your drinks cold for hours, especially if you get the cans from the Privilege restaurant. The grounds here are all kept immaculate with people working round the clock and the wildlife are amazing, walking to the pool & back and seeing Coatis, Iguanas and I think they're called Capybaras, we even saw a Racoon!!! Book a trip to Isla Mujeres, we booked through the desk at reception and went with Cancun Sailing, our booking included pick up & drop offs, catamaran trip to the Island, food & drink for 1.5 hours when you get to the island and drinks on the journey there and back. I have to say that trip was the highlight of our holiday, the beaches there are amazing and the crew on board our catamaran were the best with a shout out to Oscar, stopping off on the way for snorkeling and on the way back to jump off the catamaran into the sea and the drinks flowed endlessly. Coco Bongos is another must whatever your age, we're 51 & 54, however if you do go then book the front row tickets, they are the most expensive (think we paid around £130 each) but you will not be disappointed. We also booked this through the desk in reception, the cost included pick up & drop off, canvas bag & T shirt, best seats in the house and your drinks all night and again they were not slow with topping up your glass. The show here is absolutely amazing

Great resort, made even better thanks to Kenddell and staff!

Our stay at Ocean Maya Royale Resort in Playa del Carmen was absolutely incredible, and I can't recommend it enough! While there was a small hiccup at the beginning when we didn’t initially get the ocean-view room we paid for, the staff went above and beyond to make it right. By the next day, they moved us to the perfect room with a stunning view of the ocean and pool. It was well worth the wait and made our stay even more special. First and foremost, Kenddell from the entertainment staff deserves all the praise! He was, without a doubt, the highlight of our trip. Kenddell consistently went above and beyond, making each of us feel so special and loved. He always took the time to shout us out, greet us warmly, and make us feel like part of the family. Not to mention, his dancing skills are top-tier—such a joy to watch! Kenddell truly made the trip unforgettable and is hands-down one of the best parts of the resort. The service was exceptional, with all the staff being attentive, friendly, and eager to ensure we were having the best time. The bartenders were phenomenal, especially Miguel at the pool bar, who always kept the drinks flowing and made our time by the pool so much fun. We celebrated New Year’s Eve at the resort and had an absolute blast! The energy, the entertainment, and the overall vibe made it such a memorable way to ring in the new year. The rooms were spacious and immaculately clean, offering a comfortable retreat after a long day of fun. The buffet had a huge selection of delicious options, so there was always something to satisfy everyone’s tastes. My favorite spot had to be the party pool, where the lively atmosphere kept us coming back day after day. The resort grounds were stunning, and the wildlife added so much charm to the experience. We absolutely loved seeing the coatis, iguanas, and, of course, Pancho the cat, who likes to hang out near the Dolce Vita restaurant. It was such a treat to be surrounded by so much nature! The nearby lagoon, just a 15-minute walk from the resort, was breathtaking and definitely worth visiting. While there were two brief power outages during our stay, they lasted no more than 15 minutes and were due to a Playa del Carmen issue, not the resort itself. The staff handled it smoothly, and it didn’t disrupt our experience at all. Ocean Maya Royale is truly a gem, and I can’t wait to return. Between the incredible staff, vibrant atmosphere, and beautiful setting, this resort gave us one of the best vacations ever. Highly recommend!

An adult club that truly goes the distance

This all inclusive deserves its 4.5 star rating and my attention as my wife and I had a really wonderful holiday !! The grounds are large and clean with a beautiful beach and lots of walking opportunities ! The food at the main buffet was great especially the Christmas dinner where the staff and chefs outdid themselves with delicious choices of seafood etc Cleanliness and great management makes this place worth returning to The specialty restaurants were amazing especially the Italian where it was as good and creatively well done and comparable to the most expensive we’ve eaten at .. the brick oven they cooked in didn’t hurt 😊🎶 Don’t hesitate .. if you are looking for a top notch Adult Only Club this is it
