Nice enough hotel but way too noisy....
Rooms are nice and fairly high spec. Breakfast is plentiful but very average and no optika for different dietary requiremnts. The noise at the hotel is unbearable. It's the noisiest hotel I've ever stayed in. They should provide earplugs as standard but even using my own, I could still hear through them. Noise all night long and particularly bad from 3.30am onwards.

Perfect!
A perfect place to stay to explore San Francisco. Incredibly comfortable bed. Quiet room. Ideal location. Buffet breakfast plentiful and a great way to fuel up for a day out and about. Staff friendly. Very useful having a convenience store in the lobby for snacks and drinks.

Girls Weekend
Staff was very friendly, rooms were clean, location was perfect for a quick get away. Pier 39 was an 8 min walk and there was a great restaurant and cafe right behind the hotel.

Nickel and dime + unexpected fees
They have a phenomenal breakfast! Truly. Their hotel policies otherwise, though, are odd. We left a hotel in a bad part of town and looked at Riu as a possible place to move to for the rest of our vacation. We visited the hotel, explained our situation and decided we would transfer over the next day. We asked the woman about the check in time, and also asked if we could check in early. She said yes, for a fee. We stayed our last night at the original hotel, packed up and ubered over to Riu. When we arrived (yes, earlier than 3 pm, their check in time, since our hotel had a check OUT time that was several hours earlier), and they didn't have our room ready. Issue #1: We asked about the early check-in and were told it was $100 (as we are standing their with our suitcases with no where else to go). $100 to check into our room 3 hours early! The whole 24 hours was $186, but to check in early it is an extra $100? Ridiculous. Issue #2: I reviewed the room via TripAdvisor, and selected a third party from their website called Prestigia. Do NOT do this. I booked it at 8 am, and at noon, the reservation STILL hadn't appeared in Riu's system, but it was showing in my checking account. We checked our bags with the porter, grabbed lunch, and returned to wait in the lobby. Since we basically had no room and were unwilling to by the ridiculous surcharge, we went on a 1:30 Muir Woods tour. It wasn't until half-way through our 4-hour tour that we finally heard from Riu to say they had received our reservation. Issue # 3: Continuing on with the booking problems, I paid the fee online to Prestigia for 2 nights and the cost was $292. When we arrived, I had to pay another $80 in taxes that were not included online. I don't understand this, and have never paid 2 separate fees for the same hotel stay. Riu seemed to think it was normal to charge people this fee on arrival. Buyer beware that whatever you are paying online is NOT the total cost of the room. Issue #4: if you choose to eat at any of the local restaurants, do not bother bringing your leftovers to the hotel. Riu charges a $20 fee to bring a microwave to your room! Ridiculous. Issue #5: On the last morning of our stay, the maids came by and straightened the room. Why would they make the bed, and give us fresh towels hours before we leave? I'm concerned they will not clean the tub and put fresh sheets on the bed for the next client. My husband suggested we mess up the bed again so they wouldn't try to reuse the room. I would think they would have a chart letting them know which rooms did and did not need tending to and waiting until people checking out the same day to redo the room. By they way, they do not do late check outs either. If I were to do this experience over again, I would look at other hotels nearby such as the Hyatt Centric or Holiday Inn Express. I hate that we lost a notable part of our trip transferring hotels and that Riu wasn't more helpful in the process. I found their nickeling and diming policies to be off-putting and will not stay with them again.
