    Pool chair combat zone

We have stayed at the Grand Wailea over 20 times in the last 30 years for 10 days each time. We have spent 7-8 months at this hotel and probably $200,000 here. Unfortunately, the “Grand” is now the lowest traveler ranked beach hotel in Wailea on TripAdvisor despite having the nicest physical grounds by far. This is mostly due to their new unreasonable junk fees. The staff are all very kind and hard working but are now forced by the owners to nickel and dime the guests with new fees. For example, in the last couple of years the number of complimentary beach and pool chairs have been reduced by 30-40%. There are no longer enough chairs for all the guests creating a “mad dash” for the few available chairs every morning at 7 AM. The old chairs are now hidden in a closet area (see picture) in an attempt to force the guests to pay $600 per day for a cabana or $150 per day for chairs on the public beach. On our recent 10 day stay, we would have been charged an additional unexpected $1500 to simply sit on the beach or $6000 for a cabana just to get a chair by the pool. We were unable to even sit by the great adult pool area because this area is now filled with expensive, mostly unused cabanas. We got tired of playing musical chairs every early morning and finally just went to Walmart and bought our own beach chairs. From recent reports, the current owner is trying to sell this hotel which explains the lack of concern for their loyal guests. It will be difficult for a new owner to restore their reputation. With all the new junk fees, it is better now to stay at one of the neighboring properties which is what we will do from now on.

    Lack luster

We’ve been here 3 times including this time. This will be our last The resort has clearly lost it’s luster Our room was about 1k a night for 3 nights Not sure if new ownership cares about quality, my understanding Blackrock owns the hotel resort Service concierge are rude, not informative Room AC wasn’t working from the beginning., needed to call engineering Bathroom counter full of ants on our first night, needed to call room cleaning service Also what I can only describe as a water leak active or past and bubbling of the paint in the room. Room walls are dirty and paint is chipping on doors in the room. Lots of deferred maintenance throughout the hotel Food is mediocre at best. Not exactly the luxury and friendly service experience we’ve been looking forward to based on our past visits.

    Great Resort- Particularly for Families

We stayed here on a trip for business that we tacked days onto for vacation. We had a great oceanfront view room. The pool was the biggest draw because it kept the kids busy all day. The Lava tube was a fun slide, along with the Tarzan rope and Gorge slide. The beach out front was great for kids with very gentle surf, which is hard to find in Hawaii. My 6 (just turned a week ago) and 9 year old played a lot in the smaller waves, I saw some past reviews with people complaining about the staff or some aspects of the pool being closed. I found everyone onsite to be very friendly and helpful from the front desk, bell desk, Loulu's food, and valet. There was no construction. Yes, the water elevator is only open for a 3-4 hour block midday, but its kind of a thing you do once. I didn't go on it and no big deal, the slides are way more fun. Yes, beach chairs can fill at the pool but zero issues at 9-10am. Just don't show up at noon. On the beach there really aren't that many beach chairs to begin with but that doesn't bother me at all. I grew up going to beaches using beach towels and there is a towel stop literally right next to the beach....just grab some towels and sit in the sand. That's fun and what I always do at the beach so we were completely unphased by a low count on beach chairs. I did go to a 24/7 cafe at the hotel as that had the best prices. There is also a grocery store, Island Market, at the shops of Wailea that's a 5min walk (great prices on food) and plenty of restaurants that are easy to walk too. We aren't big on spending $200+ per meal to feed a family of 4 so we mostly went to the grocery store or offsite restaurants. Since I am a Diamond with Hilton, there is a $50 daily credit we mostly used at the 24/7 cafe. The rooms did not come with microwaves which I thought was weird, given you can get one even at a Days Inn. I did pay a one time $50 for one reluctantly, and it paid for itself given we mostly bought outside food. I think that could be improved- a hotel of this caliber should have microwaves. I can tell that the room and hotel is a little older but not in a bad way. The rooms were not worn with poor carpets, everything was great. I could just tell from the decor. After staying at a Hyatt Grand Vacations in Lahaina you can see the difference but this would not have any impact on me staying here again. Great resort in a great location,

Thank you!! Can't wait to return!

We had an amazing stay! Special thanks to Beau Bennett, Front Office Manager. He was delightful to work with and really went out of his way to ensure we had a comfortable and enjoyable visit. We really enjoyed the workout classes and the variety of the classes available to guests. Nancy's classes were great! A couple suggestions to really elevate the property - turndown service for all rooms, a fresh juice bar (at least with breakfast service). Also, I understand the concept behind the water bottles and refill stations, but more water bottles readily available throughout the property (i.e. with the bell desk or front desk) would be appreciated. We are looking forward to our next stay, thank you!!

    Meh—just ok this time

I was not wowed, in fact pretty disappointed this time. I stayed here for a week the 2nd week of January and although the grounds are beautiful and every employee I encountered was fantastic, I was disappointed by “the little things.” First, I get to my room and 2 of the pillowcases had holes in them—one of them had 4 very visible large holes front and center on my freshly made bed. The duvet cover also had a hole and this was how my bed was made up all week. The bath towels were soft, but every single towel I used had a stain on it or some were in definite need of being replaced. Not what I expected from the high end Waldorf brand. My room had an adjoining room option and I think that contributed to being able to easily hear my neighbors tv and conversations. The tile floors in the common area make it very loud as people or bellmen are wheeling luggage, like every morning I was woken up at 530 hearing this! Disappointed that they now charge a lot for 1/2 day chair and umbrella rentals (last time I was here full day was included as a part of the resort fee). If you didn’t get to the pools the minute they opened, you wouldn’t get a chair. The servers at the adult pool were outstanding!
