Family activities in Long Island, NY

  • Coney Island

World-famous Coney Island is a residential neighborhood that transforms into a tourist destination and entertainment district each summer. Well-known for it's Wonder Wheel, Luna Park, the famous Cyclone roller coaster, Nathan's Famous hotdogs, and Luna Park. Summer takes on an eccentric vibe as June brings the Mermaid Parade, street performers, and the Circus Sideshow. Plus there's sunbathing and swimming on Coney Island Beach and strolling the Riegelmann Boardwalk for shops, food, and bars.
  • New York Aquarium

Visitors school to the Lost City of Atlantis-themed Long Island Aquarium in Riverhead. One of the many draws is the 20,000-gallon coral reef tank on display, making it one of the Western Hemisphere's largest all living coral displays. Another of the aquariums FINtastic attractions is the 120,000-gallon shark tank and the Shark Dive, Jawsome Aquatic Adventure. Parent Magazine named the Long Island destination a Top 10 aquarium for children. Penguins, sea lions, marmosets, and tropical fish call the aquarium home as well.
  • Rockaway Beach

Famous New York philosopher Joey Ramone once said, "It's not hard, not far to reach. We can hitch a ride to Rockaway Beach." You can hitch a ride with a flight and hotel deal for a Long Island vacation package from Southwest Vacations. The sun is out, and you can get some at Rockaway Beach. Rockaway, on Long Island, has been popular with summer beachgoers since the 1830s for swimming, sunbathing, sand volleyball, and even year-round surfing. A 5.5-mile boardwalk is active with skateboards, food vendors, and patio bars buzzing with patrons.

Nightlife and entertainment in Long Island, NY

  • Fine dining

Long Island is just a subway ride away from Manhattan might as well be lightyears away in the lifestyle, atmosphere, and culinary offerings. Crisscrossed by rivers and surrounded by the ocean, Long Island is home to an array of fresh seafood, locally-sourced farm fare, and local wines, dining experiences range from unassuming to luxurious. Some Long Island seafood standouts are Ed's Lobster Bar and Bostwick's Chowder House. While we recommend Tweeds for the excellent food and wine selection and Farm Country Kitchen for locally sourced seasonal ingredients.
  • Club/dancing

While NYC is known as the City that Never Sleeps, Long Island has plenty of clubs to keep the party going into the wee hours. Winners Circle Nightclub is a Latin-theme hot spot with a large dancefloor, where DJ's let the bass drop, and the bar has cocktails and bar bites. The futuristic look and feel of Aura nightclub where the light show drenches the huge dance floor, spacious bar, and VIP areas. Tropix on the Mile is aseasonal, high-energy nightspot boasting a DJ-fueled dance floor & big outdoor patio with bay views.
  • Out on the town

If you are looking for something more than drinking or dancing, or maybe kid-friendly or more intimate, Long Island features lots of nightlife beyond the party scene. Governors Comedy Club has plenty of stand-up creds. The Greenport Carousel is a whole new experience as night under the stars. Find the clues, solve the riddles, to escape Epic Escape Rooms Long Island. Or flee to the Hamptons for a night out. Check out the stars up close in person through the telescope at The Custer Institute and Observatory. Waste time as a family at Station Sports Mini Golf.

Characterized by both serene beaches and rocky bluffs, Montauk Point Lighthouse, and Greenport Village, Long Island is a charming east coast destination with plenty of history and attractions. Historic sites, museums, parks, golf courses, nature preserves, and beautiful beaches will provide days of relaxation and family fun.
