The Institute for Marine Mammal Studies
A research organization located in Gulfport, Mississippi, The Institute for Marine Mammal Studies dedicated to conservation, education, research, and conservation of marine mammals and their environment, in the captivity and the wild. The Institute cares for injured and sick marine mammals in the subregion of the Gulf Coast that covers Alabama, Louisiana, and Mississippi. Biloxi Lighthouse
Standing since 1848, the Biloxi Lighthouse is 64 feet tall and one of the first cast-iron lighthouses to be constructed in the South. It has survived hurricanes, the Civil War, and the steady decline of Ole Miss football. The Katrina Hurricane damaged the lighthouse significantly with waves reaching 1 ⁄ 3 of the way up the structure, and water damage destroyed the electrical system. The lighthouse was fully restored and reopened in 2010. The lighthouse is unique in that it resides in the middle of a busy highway. The U.S. Coast Guard now manages the lighthouse. -
